Hurst Shifter

This album covers the installation of a Hurst Shifter (Part #391-5020) into my truck. This was a 7 hour install, due to the documentation and testing that was done. Regular install should be under 2 hours. Hurst sent the kit to me to evaluate the shifter on the Ranger. It had a great feel and quick shift action, but in the end it was too noisy for normal driving. This shifter was replaced with an OEM Ford FX4 shifter.

In an effort to reduce the noise of the shifter I tried to add some insulation material to the center console. Ford does not insulate the console, as their design does not bring gear noise into the cabin. Unfortunately Ford’s design is also numb and hard to shift.

In working with Hurst, I suggested that a longer arm would improve the shifter’s placement. Hurst was kind enough to send a 538-8022 billet arm, which works much better. They also sent a vibration isolator plate, which along with my sound deadening has removed much of the vibration and gear noise. Here’s the pictures of my install.
